Texas hospital system confirms first case of COVID-19 lambda variant; first detected in Peru

A hospital system in Texas has confirmed its first case of the COVID-19 lambda variant, which was first detected in Peru last August and is quickly spreading through South America.
Details of the strain are limited, but, so far, preliminary evidence suggests lambda has an easier time infecting cells and is a bit better at dodging immune systems.
The World Health Organization says it's definitely something people need to keep an eye on.
