Federal authorities have ordered additional security personnel to protect public transportation in New York and across the country, but declined to raise the terror threat level.
Extra National Guardsmen, police, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents and other armed security personnel were present along Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) trains and stations Tuesday. They work as part of TSA's Visual Intermodal Protection and Response (VIPR) program, which is currently serving to protect eight major U.S. cities.
Not all LIRR commuters were concerned with the increased security presence.
"I guess I don't really take extra notice to them," Cedarhurst resident Donnie Bodner said at Manhattan's Penn Station. Bodner added that he's used to it after the past seven years.
VIPR's activity comes on the heels of attempted terrorist attacks in London, England and Glasgow, Scotland, both in the United Kingdom. Independence Day also factored in, with celebrations occurring throughout the week.
