Two Medford cousins charged with the murder of an East Patchogue man found dead in his yard last week maintained their innocence in court Monday.
Terraine Slide, 16, and Lavon Griffin, 15, were among five teenagers who robbed and then killed Carlton Shaw, police said. Slide, the alleged shooter, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, and Griffin pleaded not guilty to burglary. Police said the other three suspects would be arrested soon.
Those teens are really to blame, Slide's mother Darlene New claimed. "I know my son wouldn't shoot anyone," New said. "Bring other kids to the table."
However, Suffolk Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said there's no question who killed the victim.
"The facts of the case are relatively clear after speaking to all five teenagers," Fitzpatrick said. "Terraine Slide is clearly the shooter in this case."
Shaw, whose 3-year-old son was sleeping next to his body when discovered, lived in the home with his girlfriend and two sons.
