Police say a teenager was shot in Huntington Station in the course of a brawl Friday afternoon.
According to investigators, the altercation started with an argument between 17-year-old Brian Gonzalez and another man in front of Michael's Grocery on New York Avenue shortly before 2 p.m. Thirty minutes later, police say, a crowd of up to 15 men started a brawl in front of Gonzalez's home across the street. Police say that is when shots were fired, hitting Phillip Perez, 17, in the shoulder.
"Our victim was shot with a 9 mm handgun," says Detective Bruce Markgraf, of the Suffolk Police Department. "He eventually ran from the scene, ran around the corner to his cousin's house."
Perez was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition.
The Friday shooting marks the third instance of gun violence in Huntington Station in recent weeks.
"We're increasing our patrols in that area," Markgraf says. "We're bringing in some special units to combat the situation."
