A Suffolk County teenager who is a cancer survivor is working his way toward becoming a prestigious Eagle Scout.

Brian Fitzmaurice organized a blood and food drive at the Great River Fire Department. He says he decided to run a blood drive to give back to those who are in need.

The 17-year-old was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of pediatric cancer, when he was 15. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment, in addition to about 40 blood and platelet transfusions. He has been cancer-free for about a year.

The goal of the drive was to get at least 40 donated pints of blood. By the end of the six-hour event, Fitzmaurice says more than 60 donations were made from the community.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America.
