If you need some last minute back-to-school items, there are some ways you can save a little on supplies.
The Younghans family is loading up the car with all of the essentials to go back to school.
"We got a bunch of these folders and then I got this pink notebook and my brother got this black notebook," said Allie Younghans, of Plainedge.
Her mom Donna Younghans says she saved a little on the kids supplies by checking for deals online and in the store.
According to a recent report, back-to-school supplies can cost nearly $600 for one student, and back to college can be more than $1,000.
"Make a list of what you need and stick to the list, no spontaneous buying at checkouts or anything and spending money you don't have," said economist Martin Cantor.
Cantor says before you shop, create a budget. If you can, buy in bulk with other parents at places like Walmart or Costco, because bulk items can be cheaper and you can split the purchases among parents.
If your kids don't get their school supply needs until the first week of school, don't worry too much, there will be sales after the start of the new school year, but don't wait too long, supplies may be limited.
"After Valentine's Day they buy the chocolates, or after Christmas they buy the toys for next year, because that's when the sales happen, after the event is done, after the holiday is done, after back to school starts," said Cantor.
"We got 50 cent folders, the notebooks were pretty reasonably priced, so it was a good time to come, and the store wasn't really that crowded either," said Donna Younghans.
Always be on the lookout for back-to-school sales and coupons.
