Some New Yorkers can now file their taxes for free, thanks to a new pilot program from the IRS.

The IRS officially rolled out its Direct File pilot program on Monday helping out taxpayers in 12 states including New York.

“Direct file is made completely in-house by the URS and allows taxpayers another option to work directly with us,” said IRS spokesperson Luis Garcia.

Around one-third of New Yorkers qualify for the service, including people who receive income from an employer or social benefits. People with more complex sources of revenue like gig workers and those who receive certain tax credits won’t be able to use the program for now.

The pilot is paid for in part by a $15 million allocation in president Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.

Taxpayers can use the new software until the tax deadline on April 15. Click here to check out the program and see if you qualify.
