Nassau Tax Assessor Harvey Levinson recommended prison Friday for a Long Beach landlord accused of renting her home to at least 18 individuals.
Mona Liza Daos could face up to 15 days behind bars for allegedly turning a two-family home into an 18-apartment boarding house.
Daos' East Chester Street neighbors complained about possible overcrowding to Long Beach zoning inspectors, who visited the home on February 2. Zoning officials said more than 25 people were living there at one point, with each tenant paying between $500 and $800 a month.
Levinson said the $4,800 fine would not be enough because Daos cheated the county out of thousands of dollars in taxes. "If she walks out in handcuffs, this will be a real deterrent to others," Levinson said.
An attorney for Daos said her crime does not warrant time in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for May 4.
