A Syosset nanny died Thursday evening after trying to rescue a 3-year-old boy from a backyard pool.
Authorities say the boy took his life vest off and went into the pool and under the water. The nanny, identified as a Brooklyn woman in her 60s, dove in to save him. The nanny had been supervising the boy and his two older siblings by the side of the pool.
The mother, who was in the house at the time, was alerted to the incident and ran outside to help. She removed the child from the pool and ran to get neighbors to help rescue the nanny.
The nanny was transported to North Shore University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The boy was taken to Schneider?s Children?s Hospital and regained consciousness. He is recovering and doctors say they are confident he will be OK.
