Though some of the ingredients used to make synthetic marijuana are illegal, it is still readily available to purchase online.

News 12 was able to purchase $200 worth of the synthetic marijuana, often referred to as K2 or Spice.

According to a forensic lab analysis done for News 12, a dangerous substance called XLR11 with some damaging side effects was found in the brand of synthetic marijuana known as "Pure 100% Evil."

"This is marketed to a younger audience as a supposedly safer alternative to street drugs when in fact they're more dangerous," says Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, of the Family and Children's Association.

Experts say manufacturers can simply change around the ingredients in synthetic marijuana to make the brand legal, when other substances are outlawed.

Synthetic marijuana has been known to cause hallucinations, seizures and aggressive behavior.
