The swimming ban has been lifted at most Long Island beaches after Wednesday's powerful storm forced closures.
The heavy rain and flooding caused 90 beaches on the Island to either close or ban swimming Thursday morning. However, by the afternoon beachgoers were able to go in the water at most beaches across the Island, with the exception of a few.
Swimming is allowed at most North and South Shore beaches in Nassau County. However, swimming at Biltmore Beach Club Beach and Philip Healey Beach is still prohibited due to high bacteria levels.
All of Suffolk County?s beaches are re-opened as well. However, four, which were closed before the storm, still remained closed. Those closed beaches are Sayville Beach, Sayville Marina Park Beach, Bayport Beach and Tanner Park Beach.
Senator Schumer (D-NY) said a recent report by Dowling College shows the Island has lost $60 million of possible sales tax revenue due to beach closures. He is pushing the Storm Water Abatement Act, which would give the Island additional federal funding to upgrade its storm water systems.
