Swimmers raise money for Alzheimer's disease through Distant Memories Swim in Northport

Swimmers and rowers went the distance today to honor loved ones who are battling Alzheimer's disease.

The nearly 3-mile Distant Memories Swim from Northport to Huntington raised money for Alzheimer's research. The disease, which disrupts brain function, memory and behavior, affects an estimated 60,000 people on Long Island.

Bryan Proctor was among the swim's participants for his 10th year. He swam in honor of his grandfather and his great aunt, who both battled Alzheimer's disease.

"It's a feeling of helplessness because there is no cure, and this swim is my way of fighting back," Proctor said.

Proctor alone has raised close to $100,000 in the last 10 years for the Alzheimer's Resource Center.
