Some residents who flocked to the beach to cool off from Saturday's scorching temperatures had to be mindful of rip currents.

Some beaches on the island were experiencing dangerous conditions for swimmers.

There was a moderate risk of rip currents for Long Beach, Jones Beach and other Nassau County beaches.

There was a high risk, however, for Suffolk County beaches from Gilgo Beach East to Montauk Point.

By the middle of Saturday, there were more than a dozen rescues at Jones Beach of swimmers that were caught in rip currents.

Officials warned beachgoers to only swim in designated areas with green flags. They also urged beachgoers to never swim in areas without lifeguards on duty or where red flags are posted.

Lifeguards said it only takes a matter of seconds for swimmers to find themselves in trouble.
