Swimmers took to the waters for the Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay Cross Bay Swim.
Chopper 12 was above the scene Friday morning. Kayakers were nearby in case swimmers needed assistance.
The swim started at the Fire Island Lighthouse and ended at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters.
Maggie was a 17-year-old high school student who was killed in a car crash days before she was to compete in the 1999 swim.
The swim was renamed and dedicated in her honor.
