Armored trucks and K-9 units marched down a Mastic neighborhood road Wednesday and arrested two men who work for the police department.
SWAT team officers focused on a Budget rental truck parked outside one of the suspect's Pawnee Avenue home. Investigators said the suspects stole untaxed cigarettes, which they were supposed to guard as evidence, and intended to sell the packs on the black market. The value of the stolen goods has not yet been disclosed.
Neighboring homes were evacuated at the height of the afternoon incident. Residents say they were frightened after police told them a dangerous situation was developing, but wouldn't say anything further.
Marino Lodespoto and Officer Michael Beam, who both work in the department's property section, were arrested. Investigators said they are unsure how long the pair has been stealing evidence.
