Swan Prime Meats in Bethpage says today is the final day that they will be in business.
After today, the business will no longer offer fresh meat, bread or prepared foods.
They said on
Facebook, "The decision to close down this business was not easy, but we have accomplished our goal of serving the community and providing excellent service to all of our customers for over 50 years."
The news of their closing has received a lot of attention from customers on social media.
"To say that we will miss you is an understatement! You are truly the best, and we wish you many happy years of retirement! Enjoy Tony!" posted Terry Smith Kennedy.
Another post said the closure would leave “a major void in the neighborhood” while others praised their choice meats: “Best pork cutlets on the Island!”
Eric Alexander from "Long Island Main Street Alliance " believes the economy and post-COVID-19 regulations have been hard on businesses.
Swan Prime Meats is just the latest in a string of iconic businesses which have recently shut down.
Businesses like Aegean Pizzaria in Holbrook, Zorns in Bellmore, The Good Steer in Lake Grove and some King Kullen stores also closed their doors recently.
“Inflation is real so that's caused a spike in prices, supply chain issues and then customers have less money to spend on retail stores,” he said.
As some businesses on Long Island find it tough to weather the storm, there is at least one advantage, according to Alexander – Long Islanders are loyal to their mom-and-pop shops.
