The murder trial started Wednesday for the man suspected of fatally shooting a Holbrook teen during a botched robbery.
Brian Rivera is charged with second-degree murder. He's accused of pulling the trigger and killing 18-year-old Thomas Herzberg last October. Rivera initially signed a written confession, but later recanted it.
Jurors listened to a recording of the 911 call made by a passenger in Herzberg's Jeep as they were allegedly chased by Rivera. The call ended with the Jeep's crash and the passenger saying Herzberg was dead.
Russell Cronin and Michael Weed were also in the car that night and have already pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Both will testify in Rivera's trial. A third suspect is in the midst of working out a plea bargain, prosecutors said.
Defense attorney Glen Obedin maintained Rivera's innocence.
"The people who committed this terrible crime have pled guilty to it," Obedin said.
