An alleged Bloods gang member who was arrested for the shooting death of a Hempstead girl has been indicted by a grand jury.
Prosecutors said Friday that a grand jury has indicted Jakwan Keller, 20, on at least one felony charge.
As previously reported, Dejah Joyner was shot in October while eating dinner inside her home. Police say Keller is a member of the Bloods gang, and fired the shot in retaliation after his brother was robbed of a hoverboard. They say Joyner was not the intended target.
Defense attorney Bruce Barket says his client had "nothing to do with the death of this young girl."
"Our understanding is that there is evidence that exists that somebody else was involved in the shooting," says Barket. "That the shooting didn't take place the way they said...all of that information, regardless if the police think it's accurate or not, needs to be turned over quickly."
A spokesperson for the Nassau County Police Department told News 12 said, "We anticipate the defense attorneys to make these statements. We have enough evidence to substantiate Keller's arrest."
Keller is being held without bail. He's expected to be arraigned in several weeks.
He is due back in court Feb. 2.
