The lawyer for a Ronkonkoma woman accused in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Coram entered a not guilty plea at her arraignment Monday.Police say Lauren Dean was driving drunk on Middle Country Road early Sunday morning when she hit and killed a man in a wheelchair. They say Dean?s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit and that she was probably speeding. The man was thrown from the chair, according to authorities.
As she was led to her arraignment Monday, Dean, handcuffed and dressed in a white jail jumpsuit, was asked by a reporter if she was sorry.
"Yes I am," she said through tears. She also used a derogatory term to describe herself in relation to the incident. The road was shut down for five hours as police investigated the incident and cleared debris. Officials say Dean was arrested about 5 miles away after a description of her car was broadcast over police radios. Some residents told News 12 Long Island that they frequently saw the victim in the area and that he always had an American flag hanging from his motorized wheelchair. The victim's identity has not yet been released, as police are looking for his family members. Dean was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license. Her lawyer says she's not clear about exactly what happened during the incident. Prosecutors claim she believed she had hit a curb.
