Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi announced his bid for re-election Tuesday, despite his original promise to serve just two terms.
Suozzi, who used YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and his own Web site to get out the message about his third term campaign, is calling for a "property tax revolution." He told reporters in a phone conference that cutting taxes must be a team effort, including consolidation and lowering taxes by town and village officials.
Nassau residents, like Nora Verdello, of Syosset, say Suozzi's property tax hikes have hit their wallets hard. In his first term as executive, Suozzi raised property taxes by 19.9 percent. Though he froze the rates for his next five years in office, property taxes went up an additional 3.9 percent this year.
Suozzi will face off against GOP-backed Edward Mangano, who is a veteran county legislator from Bethpage. Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello agrees cutting taxes will be the number one issue of the campaign.
