Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and union leaders went to the bargaining table Friday night to try to prevent layoffs, but no deal was reached.
On Monday, Suozzi put workers on notice that because of the county?s dire financial situation, they must take a 7 percent pay cut or he?ll have to cut jobs. Suozzi says he asked the union leaders to talk to their teams and come up with a counter-proposal.
The union heads would not divulge details of what?s on the table from their end, but Nassau Police Benevolent Association President James Carver says his members are concerned about public safety and losing their jobs.
?That would be a tremendous hardship for our members and like I said, we're not going to negotiate in the press,? Carver says.
Both sides say they?re hopeful they?ll come up with a deal that will save jobs and help plug the $150 million budget gap through continued negotiations.
The Legislature will meet Monday to talk about Suozzi's plan.
