As the summer sun starts beating down, public works departments for both Nassau and Suffolk will start breaking up old roads.
Nassau County Department of Public Works Commissioner Ray Ribeiro said many projects are kicking off with Memorial Day.
"It's important we do them in the summer months because of the weather," Ribeiro said. "Some of the materials are weather dependent, such as concrete. We can't really pour concrete in the cold winter months."
Major roadwork projects in Nassau include the Long Island Expressway between exit 40, Babylon Turnpike in Merrick, and exit 52, Rockaway Turnpike in Cedarhurst.
Suffolk's DPW will concentrate on Wellwood Avenue in Babylon, Elwood Road in Northport and parts of Horseblock Road in Brookhaven.
Nassau DPW said most construction and lane closures would be conducted at night and not during rush hour.
