We are showing off some of the many reasons why Beth Page is so great. And this morning we're talking about polo in the Park News. Twelve's Caroline Flynn is at the field that hosts the event every summer and this year is no exception, Caroline, as you were saying, a whole lot of history goes along with polo at the park. It certainly does. And we're so fortunate this morning to have one of the professional polo players who is here for the summer. He's a bit of away from home. This is Brandon Phillips. You said you are in Florida most of the year, but right here on Long Island for this special season. Yeah, we spend the summers here from June to September. So we play here at Beth Page and at the Meadowbrook Club. Very nice. And you've got, we're talking kind of the history of this sport right here. It's got a long one and your history is no exception to that with this sport as well. Yeah, I started playing professionally in 95 and I actually ended up playing the finals of the US open here in Beth Page in 95. So this is a field, a lot of memories of this field. Is that what makes it all so special for you being here in the summer or is it something else like the energy of playing here? It's both, I mean, this field's been here for so long, one of the oldest fields in the country and a lot of, a lot of memories here and then also being so close to the city and with the people and the vibe around here in New York, there's always a good time to come up here. I love all of that. And by the way, he has played as far away as China, which is cool. And I asked him before, I said, give me like fun fact about playing polo and one of the things I can't believe at the game, like an hour, hour and a half. How many horses again do you ride during that time? Anywhere from 6 to 10? So there's six periods, but we'll always have spares. So generally in a lot of the big games, we'll play 89 or up to 10 horses, each, each player. I just can't believe that. That's amazing. Thank you so much for joining us. This week we are showing off what makes Beth page so great. Yesterday, we showed you some local businesses and today we are at the field that hosts polo at the park. They do it every summer and news host Caroline Flynn is there right now up atop a horse. Caroline. Yes, this is Prana who up until about a minute ago was fast asleep, but she's awake to talk to you guys. Well, not really. I'll do all the talking. I am in my polo gear. I've got Bob here with me who's going to give me a lesson in a second. But first, I mean, what is amazing to me and I love this. We got some girl power behind us. Some female polo players. Brooke actually over to the left of Bob. Who are they with? And, and how long have they been playing for? So Brooke here just got off a piranha. She won piranha up for you and Chia and contests, Fra Pani. They all ride at my farm, they ride hunter jumpers and they play polo at country farms. Anybody could play polo and so really anybody, anybody. Ok. All right. Well, you're going to give me a bit of you going to play polo. Well, but you can play polo. I like that, that's accurate. I was going to say you're holding my mic because I'm holding the mallet right. This is the mallet and the goal is to hit the ball ball. That is right in the sweet spot. Ok. Right in between there. So we, I for a little bit of a lesson beforehand, we're going to test Caroline's, but as he is moving the mallet all over because I clearly did not pay attention to put the mallet right in the middle of the wall. Now, do you want to take the full swing or the half swing? I think, I think I said the half was a little more elegant. The half swing. Get up in two points. OK. Pull the mallet back. All right, and then hit the ball. Yeah, I want to know from Brooke how I did, what did you think Brooke? Perfect. I'm joining your team. Piranha feels like she wants to move. Why don't we just do the other one really quick? We can show people the difference. So these are the two you'd see people use here, right? The two different swings. Yes. So that was the half swing. Ok. Now you're going to pull the mallet up into the ready position. This is the ready position, right? As you pull the mallet back, like the bow of an arrow, you rotate your shoulder. Look at the ball and let the mallet fall. Let's do it again. Let's do it again. All right, I'm gonna send it back to the studio with, with this one and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Just let the mallet fall, just let it fall. Ok. Oh, you know what? There we go. We at least hit it right. Very good. A little bit. Not, not so much Brooke, we'll, we'll get that. Ok. This week we are showing off what makes Beth Page so great. Yesterday, we showed you so many great local businesses. And today we are at the field that hosts polo at the park every summer news hosts Caroline Flynn is there right now a beautiful morning to start Caroline Rich. It certainly is. Good morning. We are so grateful to be joined by really an expert in polo at the park. This is Bob Zano and Bob. You know what I am just blown away with is how much of a history polo has right here at this park. I mean, almost 100 years you were telling me polo here at Beth page has been almost 100 years. It will be 90 years. It's 88 years right now. But first of all, this is the most beautiful park. It's on the border of Nassau and Suffolk County. Uh Polo has been here like I said, so long. It has five golf courses running alongside the polo field, I believe is the red course behind us. And in front of us here is the polo field. It's a magnificent field. New York State maintains it unbelievable for us, it's a great playing surface and we get along well with soccer and the Whitman flyers who fly airplanes here all week long. And this is something that families can come out and enjoy through the summer. Beth Page polo at the park was designed for families to come, grandparents to bring their grandchildren. Give them a little bit of culture and, uh, some, you know, and their, and their Children too and go back to an older time, you know, when it was a little slower, when everybody had a horse and not a race car. I love that. And we have so much more coming up throughout the rest of the morning, we're going to be speaking with some of the players you just saw over to my left and I might even myself be getting on a horse a little bit later. Newells Caroline Flynn is there right now and Caroline, this is really a show. It really is. We are so excited to be here this morning. I'm joined by Juan Vasquez who actually is the ref on the weekend games on Sundays. But he has another very important role because clearly he's not dressed as a ref today. You are the blacksmith here and just tell me really quick. Uh Juan, I mean, we've got something going on over here. You are really responsible for keeping these horses and the players so safe because we use the shoes for traction and at the same time to keep them safe, it's a very between the hill and the ground and as you can see it and it helps them out and we just got to replace his shoe and, you know, hopefully we keep everybody safe and I cannot believe first of all how quickly you're doing this and how smoothly this is all going and what I'm also wondering is, does it hurt the horses at all? Not at all. Not at all. This has been done since the medieval A and that's the reason why we safe. So, you know, just to protect them, to help them out. I was going to say the horse looks really calm. He's got a great person over here. Can you introduce who we've got with us? We got Diego over here the whole the horse and we got Miguel. He's, you know, my helper. I was going to say he is, he is quick here, very quick to his shoe in a couple of seconds and make sure he's going to be ready to go. I love this, ready to go, ready to play. And right behind us, we've got your mobile unit here. My last question real quick. One. Is this something that you have at every game or we really focus on the ring? Actually? Mostly just because I love coming here on Sundays watching the families, you know, hang out with the kids, watch the polo players, watch polo. It's a beautiful sport. Everybody should come and watch it. Oh my gosh. And a round of applause for Miguel over here. What a fantastic job. We're going to send it back to the studio. That's coming up. But first I gotta get the royal VIP treatment. I am in the VIP tent right now and this is quite an experience you can have when you come to one of the games on weekends in the summer. We've got over to my right here. I mean, we actually have the best view I think in the whole park to watch a game. But I'm also with Patty who was going to explain what this whole experience is about because this real is a special way to enjoy. Something really memorable here about Paige. It is, it's a great way to spend a Sunday. The VIP tent is just leveling it up a little, I love that, leveling it up. That's a little bit more. So our tickets are uh $75 and it includes one drink past hors d'oeuvres crus and desserts. There's music and it's just a fun filled afternoon Children. Everybody is, you know, you could just purchase your ticket for in here and have a great time and enjoy the match and just enjoy a great Sunday. I was gonna say welcome at the tent. You've also got these incredibly plush nice chairs. I love the logos on the pillows. It's an extra special touch and also you're in the shade, which is great patty. I know that you like so many people we've spoken to throughout the rest of the morning, have a history. You, you choose to be here every Sunday and it goes back for you as well. It does. I used to race horses, owned horses. It's just a big passion of mine and polo is just a great thing to do and the horses are great and I just love it. It's something I've done for many years. I love that. And yes, coming up in the next half hour we'll be getting on a horse. We're going to be speaking to some of these younger players who actually lost them. They're behind me here.
