A plan is in the works to convert the shuttered John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility into a jail.

Suffolk's Ways and Means Committee voted today to study using the property for a new jail instead of selling it to a private developer.

Legislator Kate Browning says Foley would be a great fit as a location to house nonviolent offenders.

The former county-owned nursing home shut down on June 30 after a long fight to keep it open.

The proposal will go to the general Legislature next Thursday.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone did not return calls for comment.
