With Suffolk County Comptroller Joe Sawicki termed out, voters will soon choose the next person to watch over taxpayers' money.
The comptroller position is charged with detecting and eliminating waste and fraud with audits in county government. Vying for the spot is Democrat Jim Gaughran and Republican John Kennedy.
Gaughran, currently the county's Water Authority chairman, says he is going to be a watchdog if elected.
"'I'm going to create a waste, fraud and abuse division within the comptroller's office that's going to have a lead at looking at Medicaid fraud," Gaughran told News 12.
Suffolk Legislature Minority Leader Kennedy says he won't be afraid to make noise when he sees wrongdoing.
"The notion that a comptroller should be a quiet persuader I think negates the independence of the role that the comptroller has," said Kennedy.
Gaughran is running on three ballot lines, while Kennedy is only on the Republican line.
