The Suffolk SPCA is reporting a troubling increase in what officials believe is the ritualistic killing of animals.
Over the last year or so, officers have investigated the killing of chickens and goats, the beating of dogs, and even a case involving a cow tongue found nailed to a tree.
SPCA Capt. Paul Llobell says there has been a marked increase in the number of cases of suspected ritualistic animal killings in communities across Suffolk. He says followers of Santeria and satanism sometimes practice illegal animal sacrifice.
Investigators say many such animal killings happen in secluded areas like woods or beaches.
They are urging anyone who comes across anything suspicious to contact the SPCA or the police.
