Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco is trying a new approach to convincing delinquent dads to pay their child support - public embarrassment.
DeMarco recently launched Deadbeat Parents Most Wanted List, highlighting the 10 greatest offenders of allegedly blowing off child support payments. The men on the top 10 list collectively owe their former spouses more than $700,000, the sheriff said.
"It became important to me because I started listening to women who had these horrible stories, and they're just trying to support their children," DeMarco said.
West Babylon single mother Mary Danz's ex-husband, Ronald Sciortino, ranks number one on the Deadbeat Parents Most Wanted List. Sciortino owes her more than $60,000 in child support for their four sons, she said.
"It's hard to get him," Danz said. "This is more exposure, so that his face is out there and if somebody sees him, they know."
DeMarco hopes to catch these men and put them behind bars. However, he is staying focused on the main purpose of the Web site.
"We also hope that seeing their face in public will shame them into paying their child support," DeMarco said.
