A renewed mural honoring a Huntington woman and longtime New York City Fire Department veteran who was killed in an unprovoked attack has been unveiled in Astoria.
Alison Russo served with the FDNY for 24 years and volunteered for three decades with the Huntington Community First Aid Squad.
The 61-year-old was fatally stabbed in Queens on Sept. 29, 2022, while in uniform and on duty as an FDNY EMS lieutenant. Prosecutors said Russo had left her stationhouse during a break and was walking to a corner store to get lunch when she was attacked.
The mural was originally created and unveiled during her street-naming ceremony in 2023 but later fell into disrepair, prompting efforts to restore it.
Authorities said her attacker, Peter Zisopoulos, ran from his apartment building, shoved Russo to the ground and repeatedly stabbed her in the chest and abdomen, causing devastating injuries to her liver, lungs and heart.
Russo was posthumously promoted to captain. During her career, she had aided in the search and recovery efforts in Lower Manhattan in the days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Zisopoulos was sentenced in June 2025 to 25 years to life in prison for her murder.
