A driver crashed into an ambulance that was assisting an injured man on Main Street in Bay Shore early Sunday and was arrested for driving while intoxicated, according to police.
Police said the crash happened at approximately 2:15 a.m. Sunday.
Security video shows an ambulance with its lights activated blocking part of the street.
Matt Esposito, assistant manager at Sweet Jane Cocktail Bar, said he originally went outside after seeing a man slumped over on the sidewalk.
An ambulance arrived, and police said emergency responders were loading an injured 26-year-old man into the vehicle when a Honda Accord drove down the road and crashed into the ambulance.
Video of the incident shows a stretcher rolling out of the ambulance after the collision and tipping over.
“Out of nowhere, we heard a little more of a thud than a crash.... So we went out, and the car was just completely T-boned, like completely sideways, into the ambulance. And the stretcher that I think the guy was on was knocked over,” said Esposito.
Police said another ambulance transported the 26-year-old man to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Esposito said the driver of the Honda ran into the crowd and appeared to be trying to get away before police located her.
The driver, identified by police as 32-year-old Edith Cairo, was arrested for DWI and arraigned Sunday.
