Suffolk police determined that no shots were fired at the Smith Haven Mall Monday afternoon after responding to a 911 call.
Police arrived at the mall around 4:30 p.m. and did a store-by-store search.
Investigators say a group of 10 teenagers got into a fight and a trash can was knocked over, causing a loud noise that was mistaken for a gun shot.
No injuries were reported, and the mall reopened when the investigation was finished.
