Suffolk police: Nassau police officer charged with DWI in West Babylon crash

Suffolk police say a Nassau police officer has been charged with DWI following a crash in West Babylon early Sunday morning.

Suffolk police say a Nassau police officer has been charged with DWI following a crash in West Babylon early Sunday morning.
They say the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on Route 109.
Police say 27-year-old Andrew Smith was driving drunk in a Dodge pickup truck when struck a parked car.
No injuries were reported. Smith was arrested.
A Nassau Police Department spokesperson told News 12 in a statement, “Police Officer Andrew Smith has been suspended without pay pending an administrative investigation by our Internal Affairs Unit. This will coincide with the criminal investigation which is ongoing.”
Smith was released Sunday morning on an appearance ticket. It’s not clear when he’s scheduled to appear in court.
