Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy who they believe is partially responsible for a graffiti outburst in Shirley that started in November.
Suffolk police say Daniel Wisloh has left his mark throughout the area, adding to a graffiti problem that locals say is not very pretty. Police believe Wisloh uses the alias ?Wiz Kid? in his graffiti.
While the ?Wiz Kid? has apparently been busted, parts of the area are still covered in graffiti. Police and local community groups are working hard to erase the problem and get their town looking clean again.
?There?s a million projects going on here, really positive stuff,? says Robert DeBona, president of the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association. ?This graffiti does nothing but turn the whole area into an eyesore.?
DeBona says there are some surveillance cameras in the area and that they plan on getting more. He says they don?t watch the cameras all the time, but if graffiti is found in an area they can review the footage and inform police.
The association has one tape showing kids knocking out slats in a gazebo in January. No arrests have been made in that case.
As for Wisloh and others who draw graffiti, some locals have their own ideas of what the punishment should be like. One resident thinks the vandals should have to repaint the areas they?ve destroyed, while another thinks parents should be held responsible for their underage kids.
Wisloh was released without bail on Sunday after his arraignment in Central Islip.
