Suffolk County legislators passed a measure to set aside almost 200 acres of county-owned land for government offices and preserved open space with a 16-1 vote Tuesday.
The Yaphank Master Plan sets aside 60 acres for future expansion of the county office complex. The remaining 137 acres will be preserved as open space.
The county complex currently includes the Department of Public Works, fire rescue and safety, police headquarters, a county jail, the Board of Elections and the county farm.
Opponents of the plan argued the land could be used to bring in revenue for the county. One alternative option that was floated was the development of a drag strip for racing.
