A man accused of killing a Miller Place mother in a hit-and-run crash refused to take a plea deal Thursday, opting instead to go to trial.

Police say Tracy Mangino was killed by a truck while she was walking along North Country Road in Miller Place last October. Authorities say she was just 100 feet away from her home at the time of the incident and the truck never stopped.

Christopher Campbell, of Sound Beach, eventually turned himself in and was charged in the hit-and-run crash. He faces seven years in prison if found guilty.

In Central Islip court, Campbell turned down a plea deal of two to six years. His attorney says they are ready to go to trial.

The Mangino family says they would have supported a plea deal in the case. They also say that the maximum penalty for a defendant who leaves the scene of a fatal accident is too weak.

"If you take off, you've got to pay the price. Seven years is not enough," says Michael Mangino, the victim's father.

Hearings for the case are scheduled to begin in November. The trial could begin in early 2016.
