Suffolk lawmakers introduced a bill Tuesday they hope will curb a growing trend of scrap metal thievery.
With the market prices of copper, brass, tin, stainless steel and aluminum on the rise, Suffolk police say thieves have stepped up their efforts to steal and sell scrap metal. According to police, everything from high school bleachers and cars to underground LIPA cable has been stolen. They allege scrapping businesses seldom ask questions about ownership.
If passed, a law before the Suffolk County Legislature would tighten restrictions. The law would require dealers to obtain the seller's identification, as well as documentation proving rightful ownership of the item. Sponsoring Legislator Jack Eddington (D-Medford) says a vote is scheduled for December 19.
