Suffolk County health officials held a general information meeting Tuesday night on a recent tuberculosis diagnosis at Copiague Middle School.
Tensions ran high after parents were informed that someone at the middle school was infected with tuberculosis. Suffolk health officials couldn't answer some questions at the meeting, citing patient confidentiality.
Officials say there is no current danger because the infected person is not in the school. Health officials explained that tuberculosis is a curable but contagious bacterial disease.
Officials say students and staff members who were in close and prolonged contact -- 16 hours or more in a classroom -- with the individual have been notified.
Some parents say they felt their questions weren't getting answered, especially when the school couldn't give out information regarding the timeframe as to how long the person was infected. Others say they hope no else was infected.
Free tuberculosis tests will be done at the middle school this Wednesday and Friday.
