Members of the Suffolk HOG, Harley Owners Group, raised money and rode to deliver gifts to children at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park on Saturday.
Nick Nigro, the group’s leader, began the annual ride four years ago with just a handful of volunteers. The event quickly grew, with this year’s ride including over 100 people.
“The reason we do this is because these kids in the hospital are very sick and their families are under a lot of stress, and they should celebrate Christmas,” he said.
The group traveled over 30 miles from Oakdale to New Hyde Park.
When they arrived at the Ronald McDonald House, they were greeted with smiles and pure joy.
“I got slime and a Barbie doll,” said Madison, a 7-year-old who is staying with her family at the Ronald McDonald House while she undergoes treatment for a spinal condition.
Her grandmother, Latosha Jones, was touched because they are far from their Alabama home and they take life one day at a time at the Ronald McDonald House, in which 40 families are staying in.
"It's really nice. They're happy and that's all that matters," Jones said.
Geosie Mitchell's 1-year-old daughter, who recently received a second heart surgery, was unable to be present at the event. However, Mitchell was moved by the bikers' generosity.
“It's really great to get support here for us,” she said.
