(03/20/07) CENTRAL ISLIP ? Eight members associated with Suffolk County fire and ambulance departments surrendered Tuesday as part of a corruption probe.
Prosecutors say the eight misspent taxpayer funds for personal use. According to investigators, some of the money was used to pay for meals for family members during fire conferences and trips. Two are current Selden fire commissioners, three are former commissioners. The other three are affiliated with the Terryville Fire Department, the Montauk Fire District and the Moriches Ambulance Committee.
An attorney for the Selden Fire District says changes within the department will be made in light of the accusations. Seven of the suspects will be arraigned in Central Islip, one will be arraigned in Riverhead.
