Suffolk County Democrats gathered at their headquarters in Hauppauge Tuesday to keep up on Election Day results, including the closely watched 1st Congressional District race.
Former Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst fell short in her bid to overcome Republican incumbent Lee Zeldin.
Zeldin won re-election, securing his second term in office since he ousted Democrat Tim Bishop.
The 1st District is a diverse area that spans the East End, Brookhaven and part of Smithtown. Political experts say it is a true swing district, as voters have sent both Democrats and Republicans into office.
Throne-Holst has made a point of tying Zeldin to the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump.
"I think he just has a track record of towing ideology and not working across the line," she says.
Zeldin disputes that claim and says he won't apologize for having passion and principles.
"I would work with absolutely anyone to help move our country forward," Zeldin says. "You could be a liberal Democrat or a conservative Republican -- if there's a way to find common ground to secure our country and to grow our economy, I will work with you."
Suffolk Democratic Party Chairman Richard Schaffer predicted a very large voter turnout, possibly higher than in 2008, which was driven up by what he called the "Obama factor."
