More than 200 small businesses that sell furniture recently received letters from Suffolk County telling them to pay hundreds of dollars for a license.
The letter says the businesses must pay $600 for a home-furnishing license, which one legislator says is tantamount to a money grab. He believes the law is being misconstrued by the county.
"The nature of this law was for new furniture that was being ordered, not for something you could take with you," says Suffolk Legislator Robert Trotta (R-Fort Salonga). "It even doesn't exclude churches or not-for-profits."
The county says the law has been in effect since 1997 and "only serves to best protect Suffolk County residents."
