Suffolk County fire officials say they are worried that a southern pine beetle infestation could spark more wildfires.

The bugs have killed thousands of trees in Manorville and other parts of the East End.

A meeting was held in Riverhead to discuss how they can prevent more damage from happening.

"We have to continue to do our job of mitigation and management to take the trees down so that they don't fall and cause worse issues for our residents or firefighters in the woods,” said one official.

County officials are calling on the state and federal government to provide resources to help determine how to kill the beetle without harming the environment.
