Suffolk County is planning to eliminate programs that preserve open space, a move environmentalists say could end the county's drinking water protection program.
Environmentalists say ending the two programs could eliminate $30 million for open space preservation and water quality protection. They say it will contradict an agreement to repay money that was taken from the Water Protection Program in 2011.
They say the county will not be able to protect drinking water if it is eliminating the funds that protect it.
Suffolk County has not yet returned News 12 Long Island's request for comment.
