Suffolk County Community College is considering a campus-wide ban on smoking.
The school currently follows county policy, so smokers must stay at least 50 feet from all buildings. However, school trustees have proposed a measure to ban smoking all over campus.
The only place students or employees would be permitted to smoke would be inside their personal vehicles.
The trustees say they based the recommendation on a survey that asked students and staff about their feelings on secondhand smoke, tobacco litter and bans on smoking. Nearly 70 percent of respondents said they would favor a tobacco and smoke-free school. Another 24 percent opposed such changes, while 5 percent had no opinion.
The possible ban comes on the heels of the SUNY system's attempt to go tobacco-free last year, but that measure wound up getting stalled in the state Legislature.
The bill for the Suffolk campus smoking ban will soon be introduced to the county Legislature, although it's not yet on the schedule.
