A new report finds that the number of teens diagnosed with concussions in New York has jumped 72 percent in the last five years.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association says teens ranging from 15 to 17 were most likely to be diagnosed.
The study also says new laws have helped prevent concussions. In 2012, the state passed a law requiring medical clearance of student athletes suspected of sustaining a concussion before sending them back in the game.
News 12 Long Island visited with the Locust Valley High School football team Tuesday. Coach Chris Wagner says the team uses the top of the line "Riddell Revolution" helmet.
"It's important that the helmets properly fit, that we check them every Monday and every Friday to see that everything is as it should be. That there's no damage to it, there's no screws loose," says Wagner.
The school's athletic director says the team hasn't had a head injury in three years.
