New research finds that long-term use of aspirin can lower the risk of colon cancer.
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital say that using a low dose of aspirin over a long period of time can reduce the risk of gastrointestinal cancer by as much as 15 percent.
Dr. Dean Pappas is the co-chief of colon and rectal surgery at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola. He says the findings only reinforce the positive role that aspirin can play in keeping the body cancer-free, especially for patients who are in remission and trying to prevent a reoccurrence.
The study does not suggest that aspirin plays a significant role in decreasing the chances of developing other forms of cancer. Dr. Pappas says that if you're thinking about starting an aspirin regimen, you should first consult your doctor to make sure it's right for you.
