A string of burglaries has been reported in Islip and West Islip.
Police say there have been nearly a dozen daytime break-ins in the Islip-West Islip area over the last two-and-a-half weeks. Five of those crimes took place south of Union Boulevard.
Officials say the thieves have been entering through unlocked windows, but in one case squeezed through a "doggie door" in the back. Inspector Robert Brown says the burglars have been stealing jewelry. He also says they've been choosing unoccupied homes, sometimes finding that out by simply knocking.
Police urge residents to report suspicious behavior in the neighborhood.
