Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced that gyms can reopen as soon as Aug. 24 with strict guidelines.
"Gyms can reopen as soon as Aug. 24, but the locality must open them by Sept. 2. The localities have a role here. They have to inspect the gyms before they open, and within two weeks of their opening make sure they're meeting all the requirements," says Gov. Cuomo.
The governor says gyms can reopen at 33% capacity and masks must be worn at all times. They will also need sign-in forms to aid in the contact tracing process.
Like malls and bowling alleys, they have to have the proper ventilation systems in place.
However, officials say it will be up to localities to determine whether their gyms can resume classes and to make sure that they are meeting all of the reopening guidelines.
SC Fitness owner Charlie Cassara looked frustrated while watching Cuomo's gym announcement. He says it won't be business as usual at his businesses in Farmingdale and Hicksville.
"I'm happy that we were acknowledged and I'm happy we got some sort of answer," Cassara says. "We're now going to have to bring back our employees, pay our employees and paying back rent and paying forward rent, plus all of our other bills. At 33% you can only cut up a pie into so many slivers before you starve to death."
The Nassau and Suffolk departments of health say they couldn't comment on the announcement, as they're awaiting guidance from Cuomo's office.
