Many residents visiting DMV locations across Long Island are being faced with long lines ever since the state implemented the controversial green light law.

In Hauppauge, many people told News 12 they had to mentally prepare themselves to be at the location for at least four hours.

In video taken at the DMV Friday, lines can be seen out the door, and benches packed inside.

Security says the rush is super early in the morning when dozens of people lined up over an hour before the office even opened.

As News 12 has reported, the large crowds are because the state, last month, started allowing undocumented immigrants to apply driver's licenses.

Many say the DMV was not prepared to handle the extra demand.

In response for comment, the DMV said, "To help manage the unprecedented crowds at our offices, we have hired 300 new employees and continue to recruit new staff. We reconfigured our office space to add work stations and converted flex space, like conference rooms, to permit testing rooms to maximize the amount of customers we can serve at one time. We also added appointments on Saturdays at seven of our busiest locations to serve customers who were not able to complete their transactions during the week and will open up appointments on Saturdays at additional locations where demand is high. Furthermore, we expanded office hours Monday through Friday and will continue to extend hours at more locations as needed and have deployed extra staff to help with communication and customer service. "

One of the locations open for appointments on Saturdays is in Medford.

Some people who came out say the experience was still bad.

"When you get here at 7 o'clock in the morning, there's 300 people here," one man says. "And they only have a certain amount of appointments and then after that its survival of the fittest...." He says after waiting for hours, many people are told there is no more time to meet their requests.

The DMV says 270 out of the 300 extra staffing positions were hired for New York City and Long Island officers. A spokesperson also says most DMVs are opening earlier than 8:30 a.m. to accommodate customers.

The DMV is also encouraging customers to make reservations on their website.
