Plastic straws and Styrofoam boxes will be banned in the North Shore village of Sea Cliff starting in January.

The Village Board passed a law that means food establishments cannot provide single-use plastic straws and utensils or foam containers made of expanded polystyrene, more commonly known as Styrofoam.

Businesses that don't comply with the ban could face fines.

The new law has Ron Collura, owner of Arata's Deli, searching for alternatives.

"Everything is going to be more expensive, so we're going to have to see if we can absorb it or have to pass it on to the customer," he says.

Village officials say the ban will help protect Sea Cliff's beachfront and other natural resources. Mayor Ed Lieberman calls the move a natural step following the recent village ban on carry-out plastic bags.

Lieberman says he hopes the Town of Oyster Bay considers a similar ban. A town representative says there have been discussions, but they're still researching it.
