The snow is on track to be a historic event for Long Island. Our snow range has been refined to the upper end of our forecast. A total of 16 to 24 inches of snow is expected across the island which will rival some of the biggest blizzards on record.
Blizzard Conditions tonight through Monday Morning
The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for Long Island from 1 p.m. today through 6 p.m. on Monday.
Visibility of less than a quarter of a mile, winds gusting up to 55 mph, and heavy blowing snow are expected to make travel near impossible and life threatening Sunday night through Monday morning.
Major Travel Delays Expected, Prepare for Power Outages & Coastal Flooding
16-24 inches of snow is expected on Long Island as heavy bands of snow are anticipated to develop by 8 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday.
Wind-driven snow will bring damage to trees and powerlines Sunday night and Monday. Winds will gust 35 to 55 mph during this time.
Major travel delays are expected all day Sunday and Monday. The storm is coming in from the south so this will likely delay flights at all major airports starting Sunday morning before the weather deteriorates locally. Conditions improve Monday evening, but the effect on travel likely will linger into Tuesday.
Coastal Flooding will be an issue with this storm during the high tide cycles on Sunday night through Monday afternoon. 1-3 feet of inundation is possible.
Storm Timing
This morning is cloudy with scattered light rain and snow showers. Some roads may be snow-covered by noon, but generally light snow is expected in the morning. Conditions deteriorate rapidly today after 4 p.m. with 1 to 3 inches of snow by 5:30pm. Blizzard or near blizzard conditions are expected by 7 p.m. and continue through Monday morning.
Stray snow showers could linger into Monday afternoon, but the bulk of the snow from this storm will fall overnight Sunday into Monday morning. Blowing and drifting Monday afternoon up to 5 feet. Dangerous travel conditions please try and stay off the roads as long as you can.
